According to JK Molina:
“Market picking is the best skill.”
Luckily, this is a skill anyone can learn.
You only have to know where to start.

So here are 4 KEY questions you need to know to pick the right market for you.
Which skills do I possess?
Put simply—what result have you achieved in the past that you can help others with?
Are you good at writing?
Website building?
Data analysis?
Designing?
SEO?
Go on a freelance website and browse all the offers.
If you don’t have any skills, find an offer that interests you and learn it.
Who has the greatest pain?
Next, we identify our dream customer.
If you understand their core pains/desires—you can better know where they exist online.
Also, when you hit on the pain points of your target audience, you transition to the sale much easier (because most people feel understood).
Let’s take SEO for an example. Many online creators have no experience with SEO (google search)—so they resort to using online platforms such as Twitter to gain visibility.
Now ask yourself this question:
“From the people in/on {Location}, who can benefit the most from my {Skill}?”
From the people on Twitter, who can benefit the most from my SEO?
Location = easy to target
Benefit the most = big pain present
We’re looking for people on Twitter with the greatest pain.
The only way we can do that is to understand your dream customer better than they understand themselves. Because in reality, you’re either searching for them or they’re searching for you. So identifying what’s going on in their mind is key.
You can do this by doing exercises.
Write down a dozen things your potential future customers are saying or thinking as they’re trying to move away/move towards pain/pleasure.
Take this exercise seriously.
Since people can only find you by searching the internet—you have a small window to grab their attention.
Understanding what’s happening in your ideal customer’s mind gives you keywords for your search-based traffic and interruption methods.
Who can pay me the most?
Here is the ultimate question:
“From the people in/on {Location}, who can benefit the most from my {Skill}, AND can pay me the most money?
From the people on Twitter, who can benefit the most from SEO, and can pay me the most money?
Number one rule is we don’t sell to broke people. Therefore it is imperative to target customers that are already making more money.
Set constraints during your prospecting calls.
How can I lead them down a different path?
The last question is: How can I position myself in the market?
This requires understanding the storytelling equation:
You have the dream outcome (the desired result)
You have your dream customer (the hero)
You have the vehicle (the promise)
People think the first thing to do is show the vehicle (the promise).
And that’s part of the equation.
But most people are missing the fourth piece.
The road that gets you there.
What path are you taking the hero through?

For example, let's say you’re a fitness coach. The roads to take your clients towards the fit-body could be:
Cardio
Intermittent fasting
Vegan diet
Data
Lifestyle
But most focus on the vehicle.
Lose 10 pounds in 8 weeks
Lose 15 pounds in 8 weeks
Lose 25 pounds in 8 weeks
It starts getting ridiculous.
We focus on the roads before the vehicle otherwise we have a commodity problem. We have to compete against these ridiculous offers.
If you’ve ever watched Shark Tank you’ll notice they always ask, yeah—but what makes your method different? To which they’d respond to losing 25 pounds in 8 weeks. Yeah but, what makes YOU different?
They want to know the road (the method).
This is how you respond:
“Oh yeah—well all I really focus on is data.”
“Oh yeah—well all I really focus on is making it as easy and effortless as possible. It’s like a lifestyle.”
Now you positioned yourself as either the Data-Driven Fitness Coach or the Lifestyle-Focused Fitness Coach.
There’s no way I’m following a cardio focused fitness coach.
But I’d definitely check out one who specializes in data or lifestyle.
Wrapping It Up
So get clear on these questions:
Which skills do I possess?
Who has the greatest pain?
Who can pay me the most?
How can I lead them down a different path?
They will change your life.
